Requirements for passport emissions and revalidations

  • Passport Emission

    Should a new passport be required, the following documents need to be furnished:

    Adults

    • Original of the Costa Rica identity card (which must be valid and in good condition).
    • Pay the respective fees.

    Underage persons

    • Birth certificate of the minor, emitted by the Civil Registry of Costa Rica within the last 12 months, or the Identification Card for Minors (TIM for its initials in Spanish).
    • Original of both parents´ Costa Rica identity card (which must be valid and in good condition), or foreign identity card or passport (in case the parents are not Costa Rica nationals).
    • Pay the respective fees.

     

    In the event of the passport´s loss or theft, an additional police complaint has to be filed before the local authorities, and later presented in the Consulate. It is advised to always have a digital or printed photocopy of your passport, as it may help you with the deposition before the local authorities, in the event of theft or loss.

     

    ·         Passport Renewal (Only if the passport has the space for a renewal)

    Should a passport renewal be required, the following documents need to be furnished:

    Adults

    • Complete and sign the passport renewal application form that will be provided by the Consulate of Costa Rica.
    • Original and photocopy (both sides) of the Costa Rica identity card (which must be valid and in good condition).
    • Original and photocopy of the current passport (page bearing the personal data).
    • Pay the respective fees.

    Underage persons

    • Passport renewal application form (provided by the Consulate of Costa Rica), completed and signed by both parents of the minor.
    • Passport renewal authorization form (provided by the Consulate of Costa Rica) completed and signed by both parents of the minor.
    • Birth certificate of the minor, emitted by the Civil Registry of Costa Rica within the last 12 months, or the Identification Card for Minors (TIM for its initials in Spanish).
    • Original and photocopy (both sides) of both parents´ Costa Rica identity card (which must be valid and in good condition), or foreign identity card or passport (in case the parents are not Costa Rica nationals).
    • Original and photocopy of the minor´s current passport (page bearing the personal data).
    • Pay the respective fees.
